How it all began
The origins of HYDRO Up technology

Sometimes the greatest discoveries come from supposed mistakes.
This is also the case with HYDRO Up: When inventor Wilhelm Mohorn noticed an unusual increase in moisture in the masonry of an AQUAPOL® customer at the end of the 1980s, he personally got to the bottom of the matter – and discovered a completely new effect through an incorrectly wired coil: natural floor humidification with room energy.

What began as an accident became the birth of a technology that is now used worldwide – without any electricity, water pipes or chemicals.

History
of soil humidification technology

It was around 1988/89 – three to four years after the company was founded and five to six years after the first prototype. At that time, I was still working with the patent-pending second-generation air-cylinder coil systems, which had to be interconnected for larger devices.

Since I was still building the devices on my own at the beginning, I hired the first device builder around 1988/89 – after all, as the company owner, I also had to take care of many other things.

One day, Mr. Z. from Burgenland, who had ordered an AQUAPOL® system for wall dehumidification, called me excitedly. I had personally installed the device for him at the time. It was about six to eight weeks after the installation when he said: “Mr. Mohorn, you absolutely have to come – everything is getting damp!” I asked him how much the humidity had changed visually and he said: “About 20 cm higher.” That was very unusual – normally you could observe that it appeared more humid a few centimetres above the visible damage line, but 20 cm?

At that time, I was not yet aware of the two-phase effect – i.e. a lower dehumidification phase and an upper, smaller evaporation phase (as it is now beautifully illustrated in the AQUAPOL® Primer). It was one of the many unexplained phenomena at the time.

I soon went to visit Mr. Z. in Burgenland. I suspected he might have some other kind of damp damage to the building. But it turned out differently: the visually perceptible moisture level had actually risen by around 20 cm – in the effective area of the appliance. I could hardly explain this, as I was also unaware of the influence of electrosmog at the time – a factor that was later proven to be a possible trigger for such phenomena in the vicinity of the AQUAPOL® device.

I examined the wall carefully, but could not find any other causes of moisture penetration. So I apologized, replaced the device under warranty and drove back to Vienna in no time at all to our production facility at Webgasse 43.

There I opened the housing and immediately began the analysis – and lo and behold: The wiring was wrong! That was easier to do back then than it is today. Unbelievably, this incorrect wiring produced exactly the opposite effect – instead of dehumidification, it produced humidification, even though the coils were in the right direction.

This was the birth of the humidification effect – not intended for residential buildings, of course.

The next day, I compared a correctly wired device with the incorrectly wired one in the cellar. I wanted to know whether the field actually behaved differently. And indeed: the polarity measurement with the bioprobe showed a clear difference.

What have we learned from this?

Sometimes mistakes create new possibilities – and even new technologies that you didn’t expect before.

The future and visions

“Since we have obviously developed a really effective weapon against the effects of so-called earth radiation with the AQUAPOL® device, we are planning to launch a special and more cost-effective small edition under the name “BIOFELD Generator” in all countries. Provided, of course, that there is sufficient interest.

For around five years, we have been working under scientific supervision on a project entitled: “Soil humidification or dehumidification”. The tests to date tend to show that the AQUAPOL® system would be suitable for faster soil dehumidification (in swampy, wetter soils) in the agricultural sector, as well as for soil humidification using the reverse construction method.

This could possibly even eliminate the need for groundwater pumps. At the very least, however, they could be used more sparingly to reduce the lowering of the groundwater table. In some regions, more evaporates into the air when watering plants than the plant absorbs, e.g. through its roots. In water-scarce zones, this means wasting the precious resource of water.

The vision is that it should be possible to make some of the deserts fertile again with this technology, combined with other accompanying technologies.”

Excerpt from
Anniversary interview 40 years of AQUAPOL® (2025)

What role does HYDRO Up play in AQUAPOL®’s vision for the future?

“The HYDRO Up system for natural soil humidification is still in its infancy. Some exciting pilot projects are currently underway, particularly in southern Italy, where the climatic conditions make the need for action very clear. A system was also recently installed on a golf course in France.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done before it can be widely commercialized. The basics such as the website, contract documents, conditions and the accompanying measurement technology first need to be finalized and established. All of this is high on my to-do list, because I see enormous potential in this technology, especially in view of the increasing dryness of our soils – particularly in southern regions.

We are currently installing the systems as part of a pilot phase and collecting targeted feedback from users. After all, the key to success is not just theory, but practice: HYDRO Up is a success if the farmer or operator achieves noticeable water savings – or if the crop yield increases.

This phase of testing and gaining experience is essential in order to further develop the technology and gradually make it a permanent part of our portfolio. I am convinced that HYDRO Up can make an important contribution to sustainable agriculture – both regionally and internationally.”
